How to Cure Winter Blues

Winter can be a hard season to get through with the colder temperatures, less daylight and less outdoor activities available and now unfortunately they are all worsened by Covid-19. This winter has been hard for many so we thought it would be helpful to write up a list of small actions you can take to spark joy in your life. Not only will they spark joy in that moment but if you create them into habits you will continue to benefit from them all season.

ONE:

Go for a Walk – Getting your daily dose of fresh air and sunshine will definitely bring you joy.  Bonus points for getting exercise which will improve your health both mentally and physically. Basically, taking a walk give you a positive outcome in every aspect in your life and you get to spend time in nature. Win-win!

 

TWO:

Do Something Small for Someone Else – If you are feeling low and need an instant pick me up then doing something small for someone else will do the trick. Whether it is sending someone a card to let them know you’re thinking of them, donating money, food or time to a charity, or do something extra for a loved one. Maybe it’s a chore they always do or make their favorite snack. There is not telling all the kind things you can do!

 

THREE:

Buy Yourself Something Small– Accessorizing your outfits with some of your favorite fashion items can help spark joy within your day. Do you have a special scarf? Necklace? Earrings? Or purse? Wearing one of your favorite accessories puts you in a happy state of mind which helps you take on whatever the day brings.

 

FOUR:

Get Crafty – One of our favorite things to do while stuck inside in the winter is to create crafts. There are so many different kinds of crafts that you can try ranging from easy to difficult. Try your hands at knitting, sewing, quilting, gardening, designing, papercrafts, jewelry – the possibilities are endless! Creation always brings joy even on the darkest days.

 

FIVE:

Listen to your Favorite Music – Sometimes you need to take a break from the chaos and reset with your favorite tunes. Listening to music you love helps calm you down and can get you through any tough situation. They say once you hit a certain age you no longer listen to new music, just your favorite from when you were younger. Rock on with your bad self!

 

SIX:

Take a Nap – One of life’s greatest pleasure is sleeping and being able to recharge your batteries. Sometimes doing any of the five tips above will be too much for you which means it is time for a rest. Power naps can help if you’re short on time but if you have the time then go for the whole hog. You will feel refreshed and be able to take on whatever the day has lined up for you.

There you go! With these tips, you'll be creating joy throughout your winter day like a pro. Once you’ve created habits like these you will begin to feel the repercussions throughout your life.
